Arkansas students in IWU's online NP programs

The open question is the state board: its published rules say little about programs from elsewhere that only place students, so settle that with IWU before term.

IWU's disclosures for Arkansas students
IWU takes part in NC-SARA. Its professional licensure disclosures dated September 2022 find that the MSN and certificate NP tracks, plus the BSN-to-DNP in FNP or PMHNP, satisfy educational requirements in all 50 states, which puts Arkansas on the 'meets' side. Only the ASN-to-MSN FNP differs, since its June 2024 version marks Arkansas 'not yet determined.'

Does Arkansas approve out-of-state clinical placements?
The Arkansas State Board of Nursing's published rules leave this unsettled. 17 CAR Part 125, the prelicensure standards, reaches an out-of-state institution only when it wants to open a new program inside Arkansas, which also brings in the Arkansas Division of Higher Education. The APRN program rules in 17 CAR Part 123, Subpart 10 handle new and established programs through 'deemed status' based on national accreditation. Neither describes a step for a school that simply places graduate students with Arkansas preceptors, and ASBN staff have not confirmed a position.
Arkansas law (A.C.A. 17-87-103(2)) lets students in ASBN-approved programs perform nursing incidental to their studies without a license of their own. As an IWU student you practice on your own RN license instead, which IWU requires anyway.
Ask IWU faculty, in writing, whether anything must be filed with the ASBN before your first Arkansas clinical course; do not assume silence means nothing is needed.
Reduced practice and the Arkansas preceptor search
AANP rates Arkansas as reduced practice. Every Arkansas NP holds a regulated physician agreement for some element of practice, and a physician protocol agreement governs prescribing of select medications. Your preceptor will often work alongside a collaborating physician, and IWU's NP Clinical Guidelines decide who qualifies.
Central Arkansas is the largest market, about 778,000 people in the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway metro. Students there look at UAMS Health, CHI St. Vincent (a CommonSpirit hospital), Baptist Health and Arkansas Children's. Northwest Arkansas's Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers area, about 622,000 people, and the Fort Smith area both have Mercy hospitals, a system based in St. Louis. Jonesboro, near 139,000, anchors the northeast. None of these is a site set aside for IWU.
An Arkansas or multistate license for IWU hours
Multistate licenses have been valid in Arkansas since January 19, 2018, and the compact itself sits in Subchapter 6 of the state's nursing law. IWU's catalog wants your RN license active and unencumbered in each state where a practicum site sits, so an Arkansas multistate license, or one from another compact home state, covers Arkansas sites. Questions IWU students ask
Must IWU get Arkansas State Board of Nursing approval before my clinicals?
The ASBN rules reviewed for this guide set no clear approval step for an out-of-state program that only places students, and the Board has not confirmed either way. IWU handles any filing, so ask program faculty directly and keep their answer in writing before you schedule hours.
I live near Fort Smith. Can my IWU site be in Arkansas if I commute from Oklahoma?
The Fort Smith metro spans both states. IWU expects clinicals in your own community and wants your RN license good for the site's state, which here is Arkansas. A multistate license from a compact home state does that; check your own license status and ask faculty how IWU treats a cross-border site.
Will an Arkansas preceptor's prescribing limits affect my NP clinicals?
Arkansas NPs may prescribe some medications only under a physician protocol agreement, so you may see a collaborating physician's protocol shape certain decisions. Your learning objectives still come from your IWU course syllabus. Seeing collaborative practice up close is useful preparation if you plan to stay in Arkansas after graduation.
Does Arkansas offer preceptors a tax credit?
The state research behind this guide records no Arkansas preceptor tax credit or grant. Several other states, Georgia and Alabama among them, run credits, but those apply only to their own states' schools. When you ask an Arkansas preceptor, lead with IWU's course, hours and dates so the request is easy to say yes to.
