IWU's licensure disclosures, read for Alabama
IWU is an NC-SARA member. Its September 2022 professional licensure disclosures rate the FNP and PMHNP master's tracks, both post-graduate NP certificates and the two BSN-to-DNP nurse practitioner routes as meeting educational requirements in all 50 states, Alabama among them. The ASN-to-MSN FNP reads differently: its June 2024 disclosure lists Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois and Michigan only, and calls Alabama 'not yet determined.'

Precepting inside Alabama's collaborative model
AANP classes Alabama as reduced practice. Each NP in Alabama practices through a collaboration with a physician that state rules govern, and NP practice answers to two regulators: the nursing board and the Board of Medical Examiners. Expect many of the NPs you approach to have a collaborating physician down the hall, which is worth knowing when you pitch a practice.
Who may precept an IWU student is spelled out in IWU's NP Clinical Guidelines rather than on public pages; our preceptor requirements guide shows where to look. Students tend to begin near the big employers: UAB Medicine across a Birmingham metro of about 1.2 million people, Huntsville Hospital Health System in the Tennessee Valley, Baptist Health around Montgomery, and USA Health or Infirmary Health on the Mobile side. Treat these as places to ask, not sites already open to IWU.
Alabama rewards some preceptors through APTIP, a state income tax credit for unpaid community preceptors in medically underserved rural areas; the Alabama Statewide AHEC Program Office runs it. Only rotations tied to schools physically based in Alabama earn the credit, so hosting an IWU student sits outside it.
The ABN's letter of intent and yearly fee
The ABN's rule 610-X-3-.09 reaches nursing programs headquartered beyond Alabama's borders that send prelicensure or advanced practice students into the state. At least fifteen days before that clinical learning starts, the school must deliver approval documents to the ABN along with a letter of intent. In it the school lists you with your RN license number, your clinical supervisor with theirs, and the facility, backed by sign-off from its nursing leader, the DON or CNO.
On top of that comes the out-of-state program fee, charged every year, non-refundable and good for one calendar year. The ABN is blunt that nobody attends Alabama clinicals before Board approval and payment. That filing is IWU's responsibility, so ask your program faculty early whether Alabama is covered for your course.

Your RN license for Alabama practicum hours
Alabama's compact membership went live on January 1, 2020, and multistate licenses have been honored there ever since. Per the ABN FAQ, MSN, DNP and other post-licensure students training in Alabama must be licensed as RNs either by Alabama itself or through a multistate license issued in another compact state, with no encumbrances. IWU layers on its own rule: for each state that hosts one of your practicum sites, you must hold an RN license there that is active and carries no encumbrance.

Can I enroll in IWU's online FNP program while living in Alabama?
IWU's September 2022 disclosure for the MSN FNP counts Alabama among the states where the curriculum meets educational requirements, as do the PMHNP and BSN-to-DNP disclosures. Rely on IWU's own documents and confirm with admissions before you apply, especially for the ASN-to-MSN FNP, which Alabama still sees marked 'not yet determined.'
Is Alabama's letter of intent my job or IWU's?
Rule 610-X-3-.09 places the letter and the annual fee on the program. You still appear in it: your RN license number, your preceptor and your facility are all named. Keep your license current and lock in your placement well before the 15-day mark so IWU has what it needs.
Will my Alabama preceptor qualify for the APTIP tax credit?
The Alabama Preceptor Tax Incentive Program credits only rotations for schools located in Alabama. IWU is based in Marion, Indiana, so hosting you would not earn it. Mention it up front, since rural preceptors in underserved counties sometimes ask, and knowing the answer early keeps the conversation about schedules and patients.
Could I do my IWU clinicals across the line in Georgia or Mississippi?
IWU expects clinicals in your own community, and you need an active RN license valid wherever the site sits. Each neighboring state handles out-of-state programs differently; our Georgia page covers that one. Ask your faculty before planning hours outside Alabama.
