Georgia's Board of Nursing leaves post-licensure and APRN programs outside its approval process, so IWU needs no Georgia sign-off to place you. The state's conditions fall on people instead: the licenses you and your preceptor hold, and the Board's expectation that whoever teaches you clinically as an APRN student holds Georgia APRN authorization.

IWU's disclosures for Georgia residents

IWU is part of NC-SARA. The licensure disclosures it dated September 30, 2022 cover the FNP and PMHNP at master's and certificate level and the BSN-to-DNP NP tracks, and each shows every state, Georgia included, as meeting educational requirements. The June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure is narrower, leaving Georgia 'not yet determined.'

Why Georgia needs no program approval from IWU

Georgia's Board of Nursing sits under the Secretary of State. Its nursing education page explains that post-licensure education, APRN programs among it, falls outside what the Board approves or regulates, so a school from another state offering RN-BSN, master's or NP study can place students in Georgia with no Board approval step. The Board's approvals concern prelicensure education, where it reports that no out-of-state or online prelicensure program is currently cleared for Georgia clinicals; that has no bearing on IWU's graduate tracks.

What does apply are licensure conditions, set out in the next two sections. IWU still vets and approves every Georgia site and preceptor, so the preceptor approval guide is worth reading before you ask anyone.

Who can precept an IWU NP student in Georgia

In AANP's scheme Georgia is a restricted-practice state: an NP there practices with a physician delegating or supervising, and Schedule II prescribing is capped. The Board's education page adds a line aimed squarely at APRN students, saying the person giving clinical instruction must be a nurse authorized as an APRN in Georgia. Preceptors teaching in Georgia, on site or remotely, also need a Georgia or multistate license. Taken at face value, that steers you toward Georgia-authorized NPs; check how IWU faculty read it before you approach a physician.

Metro Atlanta, home to roughly 6.5 million, is where most searches start, and students there tend to ask at Grady Health System, Northside Hospital, Emory Healthcare, Piedmont Healthcare and Wellstar. Outside Atlanta the markets shrink: Savannah at around 438,000, the Augusta metro straddling the South Carolina border at around 430,000, and Columbus at around 266,000, with part of its metro in Alabama. Treat all of these as places to ask; none is committed to IWU.

Georgia also rewards preceptors through PTIP, a state tax credit for Georgia-licensed clinicians who teach without pay in community settings; HB 144 reworked it and made registration annual from 2026. Eligibility follows the student, and only those enrolled at Georgia schools of medicine, dentistry, NP or PA training count, which leaves an IWU rotation out.

Licenses for Georgia clinical hours

Compact licensing reached Georgia on January 19, 2018. According to the Board, Georgians enrolled in programs based elsewhere who log clinical hours at home need either a license issued by Georgia or a multistate license from a fellow compact state. Questions IWU students ask

Does IWU need Georgia Board of Nursing approval to place me in Georgia?

No. Georgia's Board places post-licensure programs, APRN study included, outside its approval and regulation, so IWU has nothing to file with it before you begin. You and your preceptor still have to meet the licensure rules, and IWU approves every site and preceptor itself.

Can a physician precept my IWU NP clinicals in Georgia?

Georgia's Board expects clinical teaching of APRN students to come from a nurse who holds Georgia APRN authorization, which suggests planning around Georgia-authorized NPs. IWU's own NP Clinical Guidelines decide which preceptors it accepts, so confirm with faculty before building a plan on a physician.

Will my Georgia preceptor qualify for the PTIP tax credit?

Not for an IWU student. Georgia's Preceptor Tax Incentive Program credits only rotations for students at Georgia schools of medicine, dentistry, NP or PA training. Some preceptors register for it each year, so say up front that IWU is an Indiana program; it keeps expectations clear.

I live in Columbus near the Alabama line. Can my IWU site be in Alabama?

IWU expects clinicals in your own community and needs your RN license to be good in whichever state the site is in. Alabama asks out-of-state programs to file a letter of intent before clinicals begin, so a cross-border site adds a step; see our Alabama page and ask your faculty first.
