Wisconsin clinicals for IWU NP students: Board approval and a new APRN law

Wisconsin in IWU's disclosure documents
Every one of IWU's September 30, 2022 NP disclosures, issued under its NC-SARA membership, lists Wisconsin as meeting educational requirements: the MSN in family or psychiatric-mental health practice, the matching post-master's certificates, and both BSN-to-DNP options. The ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure from June 2024 stops short and records Wisconsin as not yet determined. IWU has published no list of refused states; have admissions confirm your program.

A Board approval that reaches graduate schools
DSPS's out-of-state school form (3067-OEE, last revised in April 2026) rests on Wis. Admin. Code N 1.06 and makes Board approval a condition for schools of nursing based elsewhere. It lists who is covered by level, PN and RN education from associate degree up through graduate study, and names post-licensure bachelor's programs so no one mistakes them for exempt. Keeping approval means sending DSPS a self-evaluation on Form 3069OEE.
DSPS maintains a public roster of the out-of-state schools it has approved. IWU's presence on it could not be confirmed while this page was prepared, so put the question to your program faculty before any Wisconsin preceptor commits. Clinicals outside Indiana explains how other states compare.

Licenses for the people who teach you
Wisconsin applies its license test to both sides of teaching: anyone serving as clinical faculty or as a preceptor in the state needs Wisconsin licensure or a privilege to practice there. IWU layers its own review on top, measuring each preceptor against its NP Clinical Guidelines before it approves the site. Ask a candidate about Wisconsin authority early; preceptor requirements lists the rest of what IWU wants.
Act 17 and Wisconsin's new APRN license
AANP still files Wisconsin under reduced practice because NPs there collaborate with physicians, while flagging the APRN Modernization Act that switched on September 1, 2026. That law, 2025 Wisconsin Act 17, replaced the old APNP credential: DSPS converted existing APNP holders and now licenses APRNs by role, whether nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist or nurse midwife. An NP who wants to practice without physician collaboration files a separate application, and the Board must approve it.
So the Wisconsin NPs you approach this year may carry freshly converted APRN licenses, some cleared for independent practice and some still collaborating. Either can precept you; describe the arrangement accurately when you submit the preceptor to IWU.
Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay and the Fox Valley
Milwaukee-Waukesha is Wisconsin's largest metro at about 1.58 million people. Madison follows at about 710,000, Green Bay at 337,000 and Appleton at 250,000. Aurora Health Care, UW Health and Froedtert ThedaCare Health are well known to NP students, and so are Aspirus Health and Ascension Wisconsin. These names point to where care concentrates, not to sites that have agreed to host IWU students; community clinics and independent practices near home belong in the search too.
Your RN license for Wisconsin rotations
IWU calls for an active, unencumbered RN license in each state where you hold a practicum site. NCSBN's table gives January 19, 2018 as Wisconsin's compact implementation date, and a multistate license is valid for Wisconsin clinicals whether Wisconsin issued it or the compact state where you reside did. Must IWU hold Wisconsin approval before my clinicals start?
Wisconsin's DSPS says out-of-state nursing schools need Board of Nursing approval, and its form reaches graduate programs and post-licensure bachelor's programs alike. IWU's status on the approved roster was not confirmed for this page, so ask your program faculty before arranging a Wisconsin site.
What does Act 17 mean for my Wisconsin preceptor?
Since Act 17 took effect, a Wisconsin NP holds an APRN license in the NP role, converted from the older APNP license if they practiced before. Some have Board approval to practice without a collaborating physician and some still collaborate. Both arrangements allow precepting, so the license details you give IWU should match the current credential.
Can a preceptor licensed only in Illinois or Minnesota precept me in Wisconsin?
Not under Wisconsin's rule. Clinical faculty and preceptors working in the state need Wisconsin licensure or a privilege to practice there, whatever IWU's own criteria say. Confirm that authority before you submit the preceptor, since a gap would stall approval.
Which RN license do I need for a Wisconsin clinical site?
One that is active, unencumbered and valid in Wisconsin. Because Wisconsin participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, a multistate license from Wisconsin or from the compact state where you live will do. Nurses holding single-state licenses issued outside the compact would add a Wisconsin RN license first.
