Michigan on IWU's disclosure list
The disclosures on IWU's Student Consumer Information page treat Michigan as a core state. In the 2022 set, Michigan meets requirements for every NP route IWU covered: FNP and PMHNP through the MSN or a certificate, and the BSN-to-DNP for either NP population. IWU's June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure names Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Illinois as its only "meets" states, and the 2020 BSN-to-DNP versions listed the same five. IWU's CCNE accreditation also counts here, because Michigan recognizes out-of-state programs for licensure through national accreditation (ACEN, CNEA or CCNE) rather than Board approval.

How Michigan handles programs based elsewhere
Nothing from Michigan's Board of Nursing asks schools in other states for approval or advance notice when their students train in Michigan. Its program-approval rules (R 338.10301 et seq. of the Michigan Administrative Code) and its Nursing Education Programs page deal with programs located in Michigan. In practice, the checkpoints you plan around are each clinic's own onboarding and IWU's vetting and approval of the site and preceptor.
Checking a Michigan preceptor's credentials
A Michigan nurse practitioner carries two credentials at once: the Michigan RN license and a state NP specialty certification, which Michigan grants only on top of national board certification. Ask a prospective preceptor for both before anything goes to IWU. AANP classes Michigan as restricted practice because NP controlled-substance prescribing requires physician delegation, so physicians are woven into many NP practices. IWU applies its own criteria from the NP Clinical Guidelines; see preceptor rules at IWU.
Michigan has no preceptor tax credit on the books. MDHHS's Office of Nursing Programs did test preceptor incentives in a pilot, but it was limited to Michigan State University FNP and PMHNP students and has since finished.
Metro Detroit (Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, about 4.39 million people) holds the biggest pool, followed by Grand Rapids, Lansing and Flint. Students typically look at Corewell Health, Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health), Henry Ford Health, McLaren Health Care and Trinity Health Michigan. These are search starting points, not IWU partners.
A Michigan license, and the drive to Marion
Michigan is not a compact state yet; the NLC bill, HB 4246, is pending. Until it passes and takes effect, a multistate license from Indiana or Ohio carries no Michigan privilege, so the license IWU requires for a Michigan site is a Michigan one. First-time applicants add three items: a criminal background check, human-trafficking identification training (once), and 2 hours of implicit bias training dated no more than five years before licensure. Can I use my Michigan license for a clinical site in Indiana or Ohio?
Not on its own. Because Michigan is outside the compact, a Michigan license is single-state and gives no privilege in Indiana or Ohio. IWU requires a license valid wherever each practicum site is located, so a site across the line means holding a license that works there. Ask faculty before you commit.
How do I confirm a Michigan NP can precept me?
Look for a current Michigan RN license and Michigan's NP specialty certification; the state issues that certification only to NPs already nationally certified by a recognized body. IWU then checks the preceptor against its own criteria in the NP Clinical Guidelines before approving the pairing.
Does Michigan offer anything to preceptors who teach NP students?
Not currently. No Michigan preceptor tax credit has been enacted. MDHHS's Office of Nursing Programs completed a pilot that paid incentives to preceptors, but only for Michigan State University FNP and PMHNP students. Your pitch to a Michigan preceptor rests on the teaching itself.
What does a first Michigan RN license require?
