Ohio students in Indiana Wesleyan's online NP programs
IWU marks Ohio "meets" on every nurse practitioner disclosure it has posted, putting it in the same small group as Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan. What IWU's disclosures say about Ohio
Ohio has a long paper trail with IWU. The catalog names an Ohio Board of Regents approval among IWU's state authorizations, and the university holds written authorization for onsite operations in Ohio. On licensure, IWU's 2022 disclosure PDFs count Ohio as meeting requirements for all of IWU's nurse practitioner options at the MSN, certificate and BSN-to-DNP levels. Ohio is also one of the five "meets" states in the ASN-to-MSN FNP's June 2024 disclosure.

Ohio's student exemption and what it means for your preceptor
Ohio doesn't route visiting programs through its Board of Nursing at all. The Revised Code works at the student level instead: ORC 4723.32(F) lets an APRN student practice as part of their studies when the program behind them either makes them eligible to sit a recognized national certification exam or confers a graduate degree that qualifies, and when the work happens under that program's authority.
It also names who supervises: an advanced practice registered nurse, whether the program uses that person as faculty, a teaching assistant or a preceptor. So an APRN preceptor fits Ohio's statute squarely. Ohio's practice climate and where students search
AANP rates Ohio reduced practice. An Ohio NP's standard care arrangement, signed with a collaborating physician or podiatrist, lasts the length of a career, and Schedule II prescribing carries setting limits. Expect that collaborator to appear in an Ohio practice's paperwork when you ask about precepting.
Ohio spreads its options across four large metros: Columbus (about 2.24 million people), Cleveland (about 2.17 million), the Ohio portion of greater Cincinnati (about 1.76 million) and Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek. Students commonly check Cleveland Clinic, OhioHealth, Bon Secours Mercy Health, University Hospitals and Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center. These show where to look, not IWU partnerships.
Compact licensing since 2023
Ohio's compact participation began on January 1, 2023, later than Kentucky's or Indiana's. The Ohio Board of Nursing now reports on nurses working in Ohio on multistate licenses from other states, and an Ohio multistate license, or a multistate license from any other compact home state, works for IWU's site-license rule. Questions IWU students ask
Must IWU notify Ohio's nursing board before I start clinicals?
No. Ohio law has no program-level approval or notice requirement for schools from other states; it relies on the student exemptions in ORC 4723.32. IWU separately lists an Ohio Board of Regents approval and holds authorization for onsite operations in Ohio. If a clinic asks about program approvals, your program faculty can answer.
Could a physician serve as my preceptor in Ohio?
Ohio's APRN student exemption, ORC 4723.32(F), expects an APRN to supervise you, in whatever role the program assigns: faculty, teaching assistant or preceptor. A nurse practitioner preceptor is therefore the clean fit. Before accepting a physician's offer, ask your IWU program faculty how it would work under Ohio law and IWU's criteria.
Can I use a Kentucky or Indiana multistate license at an Ohio site?
Yes, if that state is your primary residence and the license is active and unencumbered. Multistate licenses have worked in Ohio since January 1, 2023, and its Board tracks nurses practicing in Ohio on other states' multistate licenses. IWU checks the license as part of approving your site.
I'm in the PMHNP track. Does Ohio's exemption cover me?
The exemption looks at whether your program leads to national certification eligibility, and IWU's catalog says graduates of its MSN PMHNP can sit for PMHNP certification through ANCC or AANP. Your psychiatric rotations in Ohio should run under an APRN preceptor, and IWU approves each site and preceptor.
