The Rhode Island line in IWU's disclosures
Indiana Wesleyan belongs to NC-SARA, and its professional licensure disclosures dated September 30, 2022 place Rhode Island under meets for the MSN FNP, MSN PMHNP, both post-master's certificates and both BSN-to-DNP nurse practitioner tracks. The June 2024 ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure is narrower: it names five Midwestern states and marks Rhode Island as not yet determined. IWU posts no list of states closed to applicants, so settle your track with IWU admissions before enrolling.

The extra step IWU notes for Rhode Island
Rhode Island is one of three states, with New Hampshire and New York, where IWU's 2022 disclosures add a note. For Rhode Island, the note says a new graduate must show certification within one year. IWU's disclosures name AANP and ANCC as the certifying bodies for its NP graduates, so the step is a matter of timing: sit the exam soon after your final clinical course rather than letting months slip.
The note affects your license application after graduation, not your clinicals. Still, finishing your hours on schedule keeps your graduation date, and with it the one-year clock, predictable; FNP students also have IWU's patient-encounter counts to complete, so log both from the first day. Full practice, a placement registry and the Providence systems
AANP rates Rhode Island full practice, so NPs there practice and prescribe with no required physician agreement. The Board's regulation, 216-RICR-40-05-3, governs Rhode Island's own basic nursing programs, and research for this page found nothing in it requiring Board approval of an out-of-state program before its students train here. The same rule does make Rhode Island programs' clinical agency agreements show that the agency takes an active part in the state's central registry for clinical placements. Whether that reaches out-of-state programs is left unsaid, so ask your program faculty and the site.
Brown University Health and Care New England lead the list of systems NP students know, with CharterCARE and South County Health close behind. The Providence-Warwick metro reaches into Massachusetts, yet about 1.11 million of its 1.71 million residents live on the Rhode Island side, so most searches stay within a short drive. Licensing for clinicals in the Ocean State
IWU wants an active, unencumbered RN license in each state where you hold a practicum site. Rhode Island came back into the Nurse Licensure Compact at the start of 2024: the state health department gives January 1, while NCSBN's implementation table shows January 8. Qualifying residents licensed after that date receive multistate RN licenses, so a multistate license from your compact home state or a Rhode Island license covers clinicals here. Do IWU students have to go through Rhode Island's clinical placement registry?
The regulation links the registry to agreements between Board-approved Rhode Island programs and their clinical agencies, and it is silent on out-of-state programs. A site may still ask about it. Raise the question with your program faculty and the site's education contact before you submit the site to IWU.
My multistate license is from another compact state. Is that enough for Rhode Island clinicals?
Rhode Island returned to the NLC in January 2024, so an active, unencumbered multistate RN license issued by your home state covers practice there. IWU also requires every license you hold to stay unencumbered. A nurse whose home state sits outside the NLC would need a Rhode Island RN license first.
Can a Rhode Island NP precept me without a collaborating physician?
Rhode Island is a full-practice state, so an NP preceptor there works without a physician agreement. Whether that NP meets IWU's own preceptor criteria is a separate question, answered by the NP Clinical Guidelines and by IWU's review of the preceptor's credentials before your course starts.
