IWU's 2022 NP disclosures treat West Virginia as meeting educational requirements. For graduate students, the agency to know is the Higher Education Policy Commission rather than the RN Board, and because IWU belongs to NC-SARA, the Commission's approval comes into play only when ten or more students land at one site.

IWU's disclosures and West Virginia
West Virginia is a meets state across IWU's NC-SARA-era disclosures of September 30, 2022, which cover the MSN FNP, the MSN PMHNP, the two post-master's NP certificates and the BSN-to-DNP in family or psychiatric practice. The ASN-to-MSN FNP disclosure of June 2024 has not reached a verdict for West Virginia and lists it as not yet determined. IWU names no states it excludes, so run your plans past IWU admissions.

Two agencies, and which one reaches IWU
The West Virginia Board of Registered Nurses regulates pre-licensure education only. Out-of-state pre-licensure programs file an approval application with it before using West Virginia facilities, while graduate and other advanced-degree programs get redirected: to WVHEPC, the state's Higher Education Policy Commission, and to their national accreditor.
The Commission's Office of Nursing Education and Workforce Development publishes a clinical rotation guide for out-of-state programs. Under it, graduate and APRN programs need WVHEPC approval for West Virginia clinicals in two situations: the school sits outside NC-SARA, or it sends a group of ten or more to any one site. IWU is an NC-SARA member, so the second trigger is the one to watch, and your program faculty will know whether IWU's West Virginia numbers come near it. Three years of collaboration for prescribing
AANP's label for West Virginia is reduced practice. A new NP's prescribing runs through a physician collaborative agreement for three years, and any Schedule II narcotic prescription is held to three days' supply. A preceptor inside that window can still teach you well; the collaborating physician simply becomes part of the picture you describe to IWU.
IWU reviews every preceptor under its NP Clinical Guidelines and approves each site before your hours count. Preceptor requirements explains what to collect, and no West Virginia preceptor incentive was found that would change the ask.
Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown and the Martinsburg side
Charleston's metro counts about 200,000 people. Roughly 185,000 West Virginians live in the Huntington-Ashland metro, which crosses into Kentucky and Ohio, and some 158,000 on the West Virginia side of the Hagerstown-Martinsburg metro; Morgantown's holds about 142,000. WVU Medicine and Marshall Health Network are names NP students know, as is Vandalia Health, the system CAMC (Charleston Area Medical Center) belongs to. Treat them as signs of where care is concentrated, not as sites committed to IWU students.
Your RN license, and trips to Marion
IWU requires an active, unencumbered RN license in each practicum state. The Commission's guide spells out the West Virginia version: a student whose primary residence is West Virginia needs a West Virginia RN license, and one living in another state needs a multistate license. West Virginia's NLC participation dates from January 19, 2018; the APRN Compact has not passed there. Residencies still happen in Marion, Indiana, so fold those trips into your clinical calendar; the Marion residencies page lists them, and RN license for clinicals covers licenses.

Questions IWU students ask
Does IWU need West Virginia approval before my NP clinicals?
Not from the RN Board, which regulates pre-licensure programs only. The Higher Education Policy Commission's guide requires approval for out-of-state graduate programs only when the school is outside NC-SARA or concentrates ten or more students at a single facility. IWU is an NC-SARA member, so ask your program faculty whether the site-count trigger applies.
I live in Ohio and want a clinical site in Huntington. Which license do I need?
The Commission's guide says APRN and graduate students whose primary residence is outside West Virginia need a multistate RN license to do clinicals there. IWU separately requires an active, unencumbered license valid in the state of your site. If your home-state license is not multistate, you would need a West Virginia RN license.
Can a West Virginia NP in the three-year collaboration period precept me?
Yes. The collaboration requirement governs how the NP prescribes during those years, not whether they can teach. IWU looks at licensure, certification and course fit when it reviews the preceptor, so include the collaborating physician's details if the site asks for them.
How often will I need to travel to Indiana from West Virginia?
It depends on your program. MSN FNP students attend a health-assessment residency in Marion, PMHNP students come for one residency and two intensives, and the BSN-to-DNP calls for four residency visits. The residency dates sit alongside your clinical calendar, so plan preceptor schedules around them.
