Colorado and IWU's licensure disclosures
IWU is a member of NC-SARA. Every NP disclosure it issued in September 2022, for the MSN FNP and PMHNP, the post-graduate certificates and the BSN-to-DNP, marks Colorado as meeting educational requirements, like the other 49 states. The June 2024 disclosure for the ASN-to-MSN FNP is the outlier, leaving Colorado 'not yet determined', and no disclosure is posted for the ASN-to-MSN PMHNP.

What Colorado's rules say about out-of-state programs
Nursing regulation in Colorado runs through DORA's Division of Professions and Occupations. The approval provision, Rule 1.2 in 3 CCR 716-1, is aimed at basic programs: it defines them as courses of study that prepare someone for a first RN or LPN license. Nothing in it obliges a graduate or APRN school from another state to apply to, or even inform, the Board when its students train in Colorado.
Colorado does issue a 'student permit', but it serves graduates of out-of-state nontraditional programs that lacked faculty-supervised clinicals and who need Colorado clinical hours to get licensed. It is not a placement permit for IWU students. The research for this guide could not load the Board's website, so ask IWU faculty whether anything beyond the rules applies before your first Colorado course.
A quiet rulebook is not a green light for any site: IWU still vets and approves every Colorado preceptor and facility.
Full practice, a prescribing threshold and where students look
AANP lists Colorado among its full-practice states, though prescribing comes with a threshold: before prescriptive authority is granted, a new NP attests to 750 practice hours logged under an agreement in which a physician or APRN serves as mentor. That shapes your first year after graduation if you stay. Who may precept you comes from IWU's NP Clinical Guidelines.
Denver-Aurora-Centennial, about 3.1 million people, is where most searches begin, around UCHealth, Denver Health, HCA HealthONE, CommonSpirit's Colorado hospitals and Intermountain Health, whose Denver hospitals include Saint Joseph. Colorado Springs adds close to 782,000, and the northern pair of Greeley and Fort Collins-Loveland each sit near 377,000. Treat these as places NP students commonly ask about, not as sites committed to IWU.
Rural and frontier preceptors can earn a state income tax credit for unpaid teaching in shortage areas, and HB22-1005 widened it to cover RNs, plus other licensed professionals working in outpatient settings. The same bill narrowed the eligible students: only those at accredited Colorado schools qualify, so an IWU placement does not count.
Your RN license for Colorado sites
Since January 19, 2018, Colorado has belonged to the compact. For every state that hosts one of your practicum sites, IWU needs your RN license to be both active and unencumbered in it; here that can be a Colorado multistate license or one issued by whichever compact state you live in. Questions IWU students ask
Does IWU have to register with the Colorado Board of Nursing before my clinicals?
Rule 1.2 is aimed at prelicensure programs and sets out nothing for graduate schools from other states whose students train in Colorado. Because the Board's website could not be reviewed for this guide, ask IWU faculty to confirm nothing further is needed. Either way, IWU itself approves your Colorado site and preceptor.
Is a Colorado student permit part of IWU clinicals?
No. That permit serves graduates of nontraditional programs based outside Colorado that lacked faculty-supervised clinicals, who must log hours in the state before licensure. As a licensed RN in IWU's program, you train on your own RN license, which must be valid in Colorado through a Colorado or multistate license.
Would a rural Colorado preceptor get a tax break for hosting me?
Unfortunately, no. HB22-1005 kept Colorado's Rural and Frontier Health Care Preceptor Tax Credit running for tax years starting before January 1, 2033, yet it counts only students at accredited Colorado colleges and universities. Tell a rural preceptor early so expectations are clear from the first conversation.
What does Colorado's 750-hour rule mean for me after I graduate?
