IWU nursing accreditation: what it covers and what sites ask
CCNE accredits Indiana Wesleyan's baccalaureate, master's, DNP and post-graduate APRN certificate programs, with the current term running to June 30, 2030 and the next on-site evaluation in fall 2029. The Indiana State Board of Nursing's approval covers IWU's pre-licensure BSN. Here is what each credential means, and how to answer when a clinical site or preceptor asks.

CCNE, level by level
IWU cites one nursing accreditor, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. It states that CCNE accredits four programs: the baccalaureate degree, the master's degree, the DNP and the post-graduate APRN certificate. No ACEN accreditation appears for any IWU program.

IWU's catalog and program pages repeat the point: the FNP and PMHNP certificate and RN-BSN catalog pages each name CCNE, and the MSN FNP program page cites CCNE for the master's. CCNE's own directory lists IWU's accredited unit as the School of Nursing.
The dates: 2019, 2029 and 2030
CCNE's directory records IWU's most recent accreditation action on November 13, 2019, a term that expires June 30, 2030, and the next on-site evaluation in fall 2029. The same dates appear on the baccalaureate, master's, DNP and post-graduate certificate listings.
IWU's own accreditation page fills in the history: initial CCNE accreditation in 2000, last review in 2019, next review in 2029, and a status of Accredited, Good Standing. It lists the BS in Nursing, the RN-BSN, the MS in Nursing, the Doctorate in Nursing and the post-baccalaureate doctorate.
To confirm status at any point during your program, use CCNE's public directory. It shows the current term for each IWU program level, and it is the listing a careful practice manager would check too.
Indiana State Board of Nursing approval: what it covers
IWU's catalog says the university holds Indiana State Board of Nursing approval, and IWU lists the Board among its discipline-specific approvals. The Board's list of approved schools, printed July 16, 2026, shows IWU's traditional BSN with the status Full Accreditation. Graduates of that program are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN in Indiana or other states.
That list is for pre-licensure programs. The Board says it accredits Indiana programs that prepare people for initial RN or LPN licensure and does not review or accredit RN-BSN or graduate-level programs. For the MSN, DNP and post-graduate certificates, CCNE is the accreditation that applies.
The distinction matters if someone asks whether your NP program is Board-approved. The accurate answer is that Indiana's Board doesn't approve graduate nursing programs at all, and that IWU's graduate programs hold CCNE accreditation.
University accreditation and state authorization
Nursing accreditation sits on top of the university's own. The Higher Learning Commission has accredited IWU since 1966, reaffirmed that accreditation in 2020 for ten years, and has the next evaluation set for 2030. IWU's consumer information page names the HLC as the place to take accreditation-related complaints.
Authorization is a separate layer. IWU is an NC-SARA member, says it holds approvals or exemptions from every state where it enrolls online students, and lists approvals from the Indiana Department of Education, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, the Ohio Board of Regents and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
Put simply, authorization is permission to operate in a state, and accreditation is an outside review of the program itself. Neither one replaces a state nursing board's own rules for clinical placements, which our licensure disclosures page and the state guides cover.
When a clinical site or preceptor asks about IWU
If a practice manager asks about IWU's credentials, the short answer is: CCNE-accredited at every level where IWU prepares nurse practitioners, with the current term through June 30, 2030. Keep the CCNE directory listing handy so you can show it.
Some Indiana health systems also look at the school's agreement with them, not only its accreditation. IU Health's Office of Clinical Education makes sure an educational affiliation agreement with the school is in place, and Franciscan Health and Deaconess both require one. Deaconess also says it is not currently pursuing new affiliations.

Accreditation and your next credential
Accreditation carries forward into certification and licensure. IWU's catalog says PMHNP graduates are eligible for certification through ANCC or AANP, IWU's disclosures name AANP and ANCC for the FNP, and the MSN FNP catalog page refers to the appropriate credentialing body. Indiana's rules, for their part, require graduates of certificate programs to be nationally certified.
Some states lean on accreditation when they look at programs based elsewhere. Michigan, for example, recognizes out-of-state programs for licensure through ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation rather than through its own Board's approval.
Accreditation also runs in the other direction at admission. IWU's MSN and BSN-to-DNP ask for a BSN from a CCNE-, ACEN- or CNEA-accredited program, and the post-graduate certificates ask for a nursing master's or doctorate from one.

When we approach a preceptor for you, we bring what a practice needs to say yes: your program and course, IWU's CCNE standing, and what IWU will ask of the preceptor and site. We canvass practices in your community for a preceptor and setting that suit your IWU course, and we check early whether a health system needs an affiliation agreement, so a strong lead moves forward instead of stalling on paperwork.
We then prepare what IWU vets before approval: the preceptor's qualifications and license verification, a profile of the site, and the records IWU requests. Final approval belongs to IWU; what we control is the quality of the file, and we send it complete and aligned with IWU's rules. If a preceptor drops, we stay on call and find the next one.

Questions IWU students ask
Is IWU's FNP program CCNE accredited?
Yes. The MSN, including the FNP track, falls under IWU's CCNE-accredited master's program, and the post-graduate FNP certificate falls under CCNE's post-graduate APRN certificate accreditation. Is Indiana Wesleyan nursing ACEN accredited?
No ACEN accreditation was found for any IWU nursing program, and IWU cites only CCNE. IWU's graduate programs accept applicants whose degrees come from CCNE-, ACEN- or CNEA-accredited schools, so IWU itself treats all three accreditors as acceptable for entry. For its own programs, CCNE is the accreditor to cite.
Is Indiana Wesleyan University the same as Illinois Wesleyan?
No. Indiana Wesleyan University is in Marion, Indiana, at indwes.edu, and runs its online nursing programs through IWU National & Global. Illinois Wesleyan University is a separate school at iwu.edu. Check the domain on any accreditation listing or disclosure you rely on, because both schools use the IWU initials.

Does accreditation mean I can do clinicals in any state?
No. Accreditation is a review of program quality, and some states use it when recognizing programs based elsewhere, but clinical placement rules are separate. You still need an active, unencumbered RN license in each practicum state, and some states want programs to register or be approved first; see clinicals outside Indiana.
